Here is a comparision between a simple direct render and an ao pass combined one... As you see in the third, ao combined one, there is a deeper sense of space, a heavier sense in objects' appearance... There is elswhere a suggestion of shadowed areas because of a surrounding illumination feel, something that enriches the final result singnificantly...
The ao pass does not appear directly on the render... you have to check its option in the render tab and then open the compositing room, after the render... there you click on the ao pass node so that you may have it... You can combine the passes there for having the final result... you can combine them in an outer image editing app as Gimp or Photoshop as well (I did so, in this image)... In the case you want to do the work outside A3D you have to click on the ao pass node, close the compositing room and save the ao pass from the main render window...
