This is a neat program, thanks.

I have tried importing a model with an existing skeleton in several different formats (using import with assimp) and only getting "root" as a skeleton. I am expecting about 100 bones.

What skeletal formats will import?

There is not a lot of supported format with bones...
lwo import is loading the bones, but the hierarchy is lost because the file does not support it.
assimp import will support all bones in all available format, but this feature is actually not implemented (but I can add it quickly if you need it)
and there is a currently hidden import of bvh... and if it can help, I can tell you how to unhide it.

Oh yes. I would very much like to know about the hidden BVH import.

Also, would the existing bone hierarchy and bone weighting be preserved. I am looking to modify some existing meshes that are already weighted.

Thanks so much for your time and attention. Very Happy
