I brought in a 3D helix, changed the #loops from 2 to 4, but, the helix is tapered, the diameter is smaller at the bottom than the top.
How can I get it all lined up straight ?
also,
Can the line be extruded ?
if so,
how would I do that ?

thanks in advance

Simple, change the "delta radius" parameter to zero:

To extrude a curve, just create a 2d closed curve (a circle for example), select the 3d curve and the 2d curve, and activate the tube tool... There, you can change the diameter of the tube along the 3D curve...

The first part worked, I got the helix to be straight.

But Sorry for being so thick... I do not understand the second part,
I managed to create a 2d circle but I don't know how to select the 3d curve because there doesn't seem to be one in the scene,
What am I missing ?

Basically I am trying to create a thread that I will attempt to then make a bottle from, then look at texturing and rendering..

Thanks again..

First, create you helix in the 3d curve toolbox:

    Open the 3D curve toolbox
Add an helix with the helix tool
play with the parameters (here I set the height to 50, delta radius to 0 and number of loops to 10)
Close the helix toolbox by pressing the Ok button (last tool of the toolbox)

You should get something like this:

Then create a circle:
Open the 2D closed curve toolbox
    Add a circle
Play with the radius parameter so that the size fits with your helix Or use the Uniform scale of the 3D Manipulator
Close the 2D Closed curve toolbox with the OK button/tool

You should get something like this:

Select Both curves (Click on the Yellow gizmo of the fist curve, then Shift Click on the yellow gizmo of the second curve), and activate the "Tube..." tool. You are asked the relative size of the profile, just let 100%. You are now in the 4D curve toolbox. In this toolbox, you can set the edit the 3D curve and set the size of the profile in every points of the 3D curve.
You should get something like this:

Play with the subdiv parameters and Press the Ok button/tool.
Here is the result:

Is that what you are looking for?

You have the help in the Help menu, and the same in the start menu of windows (at the same level than A3D executable).
It is not up to date, but many thinks are there nevertheless....
